“What’s the big deal with inverter-driven compressors?”2021-01-23T06:11:22+00:00

You’ve experienced it before—the blast of freezing air that comes flying out of your older air conditioning system once the room temperature drops below a certain level. When the room returns to the desired temperature, the system turns off…until it turns on again later to repeat the process.

This happens because traditional systems use something called a fixed-speed compressor (with an emphasis on the words “fixed speed”). It has two speeds: on and off. It’s either running at 100% or not at all. This can create uncomfortable temperature swings as well as put a strain on your air conditioner as it struggles to maintain a constant temperature.

Inverter-driven compressors, on the other hand, are much different.

For starters, they can work at a wide range of speeds. They are almost always running in the background, adjusting in real time to ensure a consistent temperature. If your room is a comfortable 73 degrees, your compressor may slow down just enough to maintain that pleasant temperature. On the other hand, if you’re room is a blistering 95 degrees the inverter will push the compressor into high gear to cool things as quickly as possible.

In other words, inverter-driven air conditioners provide several benefits over older fixed-speed air conditioning units.

1. They’re more efficient.

Inverter technology can reduce the amount of energy used by an air conditioner or heat pump by 30%-50%. Instead of running full blast and then turning off, inverter-driven compressors run at a lower capacity for longer periods of time, decreasing the number of starts and stops.

2. They’re quieter.

Because the compressor ramps up gradually and only at the minimum speed, it reduces the sudden change in noise traditional air conditioners make when starting up. The noise made while inverter-driven compressors are running is also reduced when running at less than 100% capacity. You essentially get more consistent, lower noise levels which are less noticeable and bothersome.

3. They’re more comfortable.

The biggest benefit for many. Instead of wrestling with fluxuating temperature swings, inverters keep the temperature steady. It calculates exactly what speed the compressor should run at to keep your room at a set temperature. Because they’re almost always running in the background, they also do a great job of removing humidity from the air.

A frequent problem. One portion of the home feels comfortable while another portion is too hot or too cold. Most two-story or multi-level homes suffer from uneven heating or cooling because heat rises and upper levels usually feel warmer than lower ones.

One way to fix the issue is to install a zoned heating and cooling system. While a central air conditioning system can be used for temperature zoning (by using electonically controlled dampers in your ductwork), the more innovative ductless mini split system is specifically designed for this type of situation.

With a ductless mini split system, the temperature in each zone is independently controlled with a designated thermostat or remote controller. Some models can be regulated through a free, downloadable app on your smart phone. This allows you to easily set different temperature levels in different rooms. You can even turn on or off the indoor unit in each room without impacting the comfort level throughout the rest of the home.

A single-zone system (or 1:1 system) means a single room uses a single ductless system—one indoor unit works with one outdoor unit. A multi-zone system (or 2:1 system) connects two or more indoor units to the oudoor unit.

The outdoor unit is basically the compressor/condenser. While they vary in capacity, they all look the same. The indoor units, on the other hand, come in all shapes, styles, characteristics and capabilities. You can mount them on a wall, the ceiling or just a few inches from the door.

A ductless system will give you the precise temperature control and customized comfort along with powerful cooling and heating. In other words, you won’t need blankets downstairs and fans upstairs.

Welcome to the club millions of Americans are unfortunately members of. Heating and cooling space within a home are some of of the largest energy expenses any homeowner deals with. In fact, the US Department of Energy says 42% of your monthly utility bill is for heating your home.

While there are a few common-sense tips you can follow to lower that bill (cleaning or replacing filters on a regular basis, turning off appliances when not in use or opening/shutting shades on the south-facing windows in your home), there’s actually a much easier way to save money in the long run.

The variable speed controls allow the compressor to operate at precisely the speed needed to generate the cooling and heating your home needs—nothing more, nothing less. There’s nothing quite like the American backyard. The brisket (fat side up) is on the smoker. Kabobs are on the grill. The beer is cold, the wine is smooth, friends are on their way over and it’s shaping up to be a great night. Unfortunately you won’t spend it entertaining outside because your outdoor A/C unit is just too loud.

All HVAC units make noise when running; they’re typically large machines with a lot of moving parts. But there are alternatives to consider that will dramatically decrease your noise issue.

Both Samsung and Bosch have meticulously designed their ultra-quiet systems to minimize sound levels (both inside and outside the home). We’re talking sound levels as low as 56 dB. Almost whisper-quiet, they can be installed in any room without worrying about excessive noise and the outdoor units are significantly quieter than traditional condensing units.
